on fox news sunday, a chief advocate of obama care, dr. ezekiel emanuel was pressed about the president's claim that you can keep your own doctor under obama care, when in fact, many insurance plans have only limited lists of doctors and hospitals to choose from. >> if you want to pay more for an insurance company that covers your doctor, you can do that. this is a matter of choice. we know in all sort of choices, you pay more for a wider range of choices or benefits. the issue isn't the selective networks. people keep saying, oh, the problem is you're going to have a selective network. >> well, if you lose your doctor or your hospital -- >> people are going to have a choice whether they want to pay a certain amount for a selective network or pay more for a broader network. >> also today, insurance brokers are complaining they're having trouble helping their clients sign up for obama care because of problems with information at the back end of that troubled enrollment process. >> issues, issues. still abound. thanks, steve. good to see you. >> jamie, it's a national day of prayer and re

:00 p.m. pacific. new obama care enrollment numbers out. there are still glitches everywhere apparently. steve handelsman joins us with the details. >> reporter: the website's better but it doesn't mean it's good. the nbc news estimate is that 100,000 americans in november signed up for coverage using healthcare.gov. that's a much better number than in october. but it's way worse than what a dozen or so state exchanges have signed up. today administration sources said by 5:30 p.m. eastern time, the site had 750,000 visits. it slowed down at times. some people got "please wait" messages, so-called queuing going on but no crashes or freezes. but there's the back-end problem. like amazon.com. to work, it has to kick out a command for a lightbulb to be sent to you. that's the back end. healthcare.gov has a back end that sends an 834 file to insurance companies. no one will reveal how many or what percentage. but too many of those 834 files are bad. hard to decipher? impossible to use, some of them. so people who think they have coverage on january 1st in fact might not. >> if health plans d

newspapers focus on what's happening with obama care right now. the "new york times" is claiming that insurers say the health care website is still flawed. the "wall street journal" says that connecticut is considering bypassing some of the back ends just to check to make sure that people are actually residents and whether or not they would qualify for a lot of the aid. and with the deadline approaching january 1st for when a lot of the health insurance plans were supposed to kick in for consumers, it leaves a lot of questions. how would you say things have gone so far? and how confident are you of things up and running by january 1st? >> well, i'm not going to get a nobel prize for observing, it hasn't gone well. to establish an insurance exchange at the federal level is an exceptionally difficult job and to forecast it's going to be as good as amazon. you just had a conversation about people trying to catch up with amazon, the government's not likely to be able to do that ever. >> pretty low bar. >> no -- >> for the peace prize. doesn't take much. >> for the peace prize, right.

as president obama begins a three-week public relations campaign for the new healthcare law, another lawsuit was filed against the affordable care act. the university of notre dame filed a religious challenge to the healthcare overhall, saying the -- overhaul, saying the requirement that the health plans cover birth control violates roman teachings. this is one of more than 80 lawsuits attacking the law on religious grounds. it will be the supreme court who decides if employers can refuse to offer benefits under the law. but that ruling is not expected into well next year. >>> some legal experts say people hear in california should pay close attention to the provisions of the bankruptcy protection just granted for the city of detroit. the judge in that case ruled that detroit can impose cuts to the pension plans of employees. that ruling comes as a bankrupt california city, san bernardino, is considering a legal showdown with cal piers -- calpirs. the ooles ruling does --. >>> they are not giving hope. why there's new hope for a san jose pilot and his family missing since sunday in idaho. >>

just a little easier now that the obama care website is working a lot better. of course democrats have been antsy after two months of negative headlines. and although the site does look better for the consumer logging on, just this morning nbc news learned that a senior representative with america's health insurance plans says there are still significant issues with the back end of operations. so on its website this is what it says. until the enrollment process is working from end to end, many consumers will not be able to enroll in coverage. in addition to fixing the technical problems with healthcare.gov, the significant back end issues must also be resolved to ensure coverage can begin on january 1st, 2014. in particular, the ongoing problems with processing 834 enrollment files needs to be fixed. i'm going to bring in new york congressman, steve israel, chair of the democratic congressional campaign committee. always good to see you, congressman, good morning. >> happy holidays, thank you. >> give us your assessment of where we are. are you confident the worst is behind? >> well, i
